Want to start 2017 books but hesitant about posting into 2017 before all the entries have been made for 2016. Waiting on several invoices to complete. Is it secure to start the new year before final version of old year has been saved?

Yes. It is fine to start your new year without having completed the old one. If you are in the new fiscal year, the program will warn you if you enter a date from the previous year, but as long as the date is correct, continue.
