You don't want to post it as an expense. For your piece of equipment you want to post it as a Capital Asset purchase (C+). This will give you access to the Capital asset classes. If you cannot find C+ in your transaction entry screen, your preferences probably have been set up to not use Capital Asset. I learned this the hard way but once it was back on it made it much easier for me. Go to Setup > Preferences > Show and Hide features. Just put a check mark in Capital Asset and Depreciation. This will give you access to everything that you need.
