I am trying to add sub-accounts to my shareholders drawings accounts. When I go to delete it and re-create it as a Primary Account, I get an error message saying that the "Accounts" module is using this record so it cannot be deleted. What does this mean?
If there have been entries recorded to that account in a previous time period, then you will not be able to delete the account. Or, if you have expense accounts set up where a personal portion is being calculated with the personal portion going to shareholders drawings, you will not be able to delete it. You can set up a Primary Account using a different # and then de-activate the original one so that it doesn't show up in your list of accounts when making entries. When setting up a chart of accounts, we try to anticipate those accounts that a person might want to make into subaccounts later on and change them from detail accounts to primary accounts with one sub-account right at the start. Some examples of these are Shareholders Loan, Feed Expense, Marketing Charges, Cropping expenses, etc.
